Google celebrates Mister Rogers with heartwarming stop-motion doodle

By Keisha Hatchett,

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood to celebrate Fred Rogers, one of the most beloved figures in television history.

Friday marks the 51st anniversary of the filming of the first episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (which actually didn't begin airing until a year later 1968). In honor of the major milestone, Friday's Google Doodle was a sweet stop-motion video using Rogers' vocals on the classic song "What You Be My Neighbor?" which also served as the opening theme for his iconic children's show.

"I'm so thrilled that Google is celebrating Fred and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood with this charming tribute," Rogers' wife Joanne said in a statement, per Forbes. "This stroll through the Neighborhood is delightful, and Fred's gentle kindness is beautifully captured in the Doodle."

Rogers passed away in 2003 but his legacy has garnered new interest in recent years, sparking new projects such as the 2018 documentary film Won't You Be My Neighbor? from director Morgan Neville about his life and legacy. Tom Hanks is set to play Rogers in the upcoming film You Are My Friend to be released in 2019.

If you're in the mood to feel good about yourself while remembering one of the nicest, most charming individuals to ever grace the small screen, check out the awesome video above.
